What is Search Engine Optimization?

According to Wikipedia:

Search engine optimization (SEO) as a subset of search engine marketing seeks to improve the number and quality of visitors to a web site from “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.

In other words, SEO is the process of designing and promoting your website to give it maximum visibility and ranking in Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. The end result being a higher number of quality visitors pointing their eyeballs at your website.

Does your website need optimization?

There is a very high probability that your site is not optimized for Google, Yahoo!, or the rest of the search engines. Most website developers don’t design with the search engines in mind, and the vast majority of sites contain significant errors which impair visibility in the search engines.

Do a little SEO test

Write down all the different things that you think your potential customers might type when using a search engine and looking for a product or service. For example, if you own a tile store in Calgary your potential customers might be typing things like “Calgary slate tile”, “Calgary tile installation”, or “Canada ceramic tile”. Now go and type those search terms into Google or Yahoo! How did you do? If your site isn’t coming up on the first 3-4 result pages then your site isn’t doing its job.

Design it, write it, then promote it

The first step in Search engine optimization (SEO) is coding your website pages using semantically correct and valid HTML. Believe it or not, this is a bit of an art form.
Every word on your website counts. The page titles, headings, and links are all significant factors in how much love the search engines will show your site.
Once the site is done, you then need to promote your site around the web in order to increase your visibility, trust, and importance in the search engines.

There is an ethical and unethical way to promote your site and you don’t want to end up in Google’s bad books! Given a bit of time, optimization should provide a significant increase in the number and quality of the visitors to your web site. Visitors turn into customers and that is the reason you built your site in the first place!
